Genesis 41: From the Pit to the Palace

*These notes come from Bob Deffinbaugh’s study on Genesis 41 at Bible.org
  • To Hebrews a beard was a mark of dignity but to Egyptians it was offensive
  • Joseph was given an Egyptian name to signify his status
  • Joseph was given an Egyptian wife – he wasn’t going to find a Christian one
    • only marriage to Canaanites is currently forbidden
  • Joseph’s sons
    • Manasseh – “Making to forget”
    • Ephraim – “fruitfulness”
    • Joseph and Moses contrast
  • Joseph Canaan – Egypt with Israel in care
  • Moses Egypt – Canaan with Israel in care
  • Joseph shepard to palace
  • Moses palace to shepard
  • God’s purposes are not achieved by one size fits all
  • Joseph is not, therefore, a guarantee that faithful obedience will lead to prosperity
    • Life of Job corrects this thinking
  • Christians love to prophesy that the world is headed to hell, but all too often this is where they, unlike Joseph, stop. They offer the bad news and no fix. We need to offer solutions to world problems
