Genesis 21: What Happens When Christians Mess Up

*These notes come from Bob Deffinbaugh’s study on Genesis 21 at
  • Sins are recorded in scripture to remind us that we are no different and to not repeat their mistakes
  • The sending away of the son of a concubine was not without precedent in that day. In the Code of Hammurabi, Law 146, the children of slaves who were not made heirs must be set free as compensation
  • Treaty with Abimalech shows how foolish Abraham had been in his prior deceit from the fear of harm

  • God’s blessings continue to come into the lives of His people, even at times when their faith is lowest
    • neither Abraham nor Sarah have been at their best
  • Disobedience has its consequences
    • union with Hagar resulted in having to send away his beloved son
  • The right things sometimes happen for the wrong reasons
  • Our fears are unfounded; faith should rest upon the covenant promises of God
  • God’s answer to our problems is often the solution that has been there all along
  • Answers to our prayers do not need to be spectacular. Often, it is our anxiety that keeps us from seeing what has been there all along (Hagar and the well)
