Genesis 15: The Focal Point of Abram’s Faith

*These notes come from Bob Deffinbaugh’s study on Genesis 15 at
  • God seldom allows our faith to remain general so we face crisis points which bring it to absolutes and specifics
  • Abraham’s Faith
    • was personal
    • was propositional (based on God’s promises)
    • was practical (necessitated action)
  • Abram was saved by faith by the one who would come while we are saved in faith by the one who has come
  • In Abram’s time, covenants symbolized agreements whereas today we just sign agreements.
  • Reasons for 400 year delay in possessing Canaan
    • needed numerous amounts of people to possess land
    • people of the land were not yet wicked enough to be thrown out
  • God owned Canaan and only let the righteous live there. Even put his people out when they did not act righteous
  • In the currend debate over who today owns the land, remember:God owns it. He will not allow the Jews to possess it and live unrighteously any more than the Gentiles
  • The ultimate good in life is not freedom from suffering, but knowing God
    • faith cannot be separated from suffering because God can use it to create intimacy with himself
